HomeAbout usPartnersinstitutions1. Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA)-France

Ranked the number one agricultural institute in Europe and number two in the world, INRA carries out mission-oriented research for better food and nutrition, preservation of the environment and competitive, sustainable agricultural practices.

INRA is placed under the aegis of both, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Rural Affairs. Its activity is defined through a quadrennial contract with these two ministries.

The research conducted at INRA concerns agriculture, food, nutrition and food safety, environment and land management, with particular emphasis on sustainable development.

INRA employs 10200 people (among them 1800 researchers and 1600 doctoral students), in 13 scientific departments. Its budget is around 840 million Euros.

INRA is a founding-member of Agreenium which is a legal entity bringing together eight main institutions in Agricultural research and higher education in France (INRA, CIRAD, AgroParisTech, AgroCampusOuest, Montpellier SupAgro, INPT, AgroSup Dijon, Bordeaux Sciences Agro). Agreenium implements actions and programmes linking research, training and development. It has a specific role in the interaction between its different partners and the coordination of their actions towards the foreign partners. Agreenium expertise will be mobilized in ARIMNet2.

International cooperation

INRA has a large and long experience of cooperation at the European and international level: it is involved in many European research projects and networks and is coordinating more than 40 out of them. It is also involved in coordination of national programmes (such as plant genomics). It runs strategic cooperation with other agricultural research organizations around the world and especially in developed countries (EU and not-EU), and with Brazil, China and India. INRA has been involved as a partner or coordinator in 144 projects financed under FP6 and FP7, including the following ERA-Nets: ERA-PG, EUPHRESCO1 and 2 WOODWISDOM1 and 2, EMIDA, CORE ORGANIC, FORSOCIETY and SAFEFOODERA. INRA currently coordinates the ARIMNET, SUSFOOD and RURAGRI ERA-Nets. It also is coordinator for France, on behalf of the Ministry of Research and Education, of the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE) and partner of the JPI Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life.

Mediterranean

Cooperation in the Mediterranean is a specific focus of INRA international strategic plan (2010-2020). INRA strives to reinforce partnerships with southern Mediterranean countries to foster the creation of a Euro-Mediterranean agricultural research area and the development of multilateral cooperation with all the countries in the region. To do this, INRA is also strengthening relations with CIHEAM (International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies) and ICARDA (International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas) by promoting joint initiatives. INRA is delegated by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (General Directorate for Research and Innovation) and the Ministry of Agriculture (DGER) to coordinate the ARIMNet2 project and to represent with CIRAD and ANR the French participation.
