ASRT is a nonprofit organization; it provides a public service by ensuring independent, unbiased assessments of the sciences and by representing the sciences both within Egypt and internationally. ASRT is a national authority responsible for Science and Technology in Egypt, and it is house of expertise which brings together outstanding Egyptian scientists and experts from universities, research institutions, private sector, NGOs, policymakers and prominent Egyptian scientists in Diaspora, to deliberate country problems, propose and carry out scientific studies and strategic plans to tackle these problems.

ASRT is the executive arm of the Egyptian Ministry of Scientific Research with respect to the design and implementation of Research programs. ASRT hosts the Egyptian Sectorial Councils, which consist of sectorial groups of eminent professors in various fields. Roles and responsibilities of those Councils includes defining Egyptian scientific research Priorities, in this context the Agriculture and bioenergy council has been strongly contributing to defining the national priorities, challenges and implementation strategies. 

ASRT has within its structure the national patent office and the national innovation and invention development agency. ASRT hosts the WIPO Academy and WIPO’s Technology Transfer Center. ASRT is coordinating and supporting the Technology Transfer Offices at Egyptian universities and research centers. ASRT is currently playing an important role in developing of the licensing strategies and local technology transfer policies at Egyptian Research Centers and universities.

International cooperation

ASRT at the international level has actively participated in different initiatives for Agricultural campaigns, technology transfer, research valorization & in strengthening coordination and complementarity of research activities in Africa and Mediterranean Area. In more than 15 FP7 and FP6 projects, ASRT has designed cooperation strategies, supported the creation of regional challenges and priorities’ policy documents, establishing specialized regional scientific platforms, capacity building and networking activities. At the national level, ASRT has coordinated several Europe-AID projects in the areas of Technology Platforms, Technology Transfer & commercialization, exploitation, assessment and broad take-up of past and ongoing research results.

ASRT was WP co-leader at FP7 project MIRA (2007-2012) www.miraproject.eu: Mediterranean Innovation Research Area. ASRT has played an important role in the capacity building strategies and implementation across Mediterranean countries and in supporting the creation of a coordination instrument between activities of different EU and MPC institutions that would contribute to the implementation of the European Neighborhood Policy. ASRT is a national coordinator of the FP7 project MATS (2011-2014): MATS Project (Multipurpose Applications by Thermodynamic Solar). http://www.mats.enea.it. ASRT is responsible for the project coordination of Egyptian partners (various Universities, national authorities, Ministries). ASRT is managing the experimental operation of MATS facility.
